Counting Birds for Christmas in the USA

December 14th will see the beginning of the season of Christmas Bird Counts across the USA. The Christmas Bird Count sees various bird societies, scientists and ornithologists take part in a huge bird count. The Christmas Bird Count has proven to be an invaluable source of scientific data, and furthermore, sounds like a lot of fun for bird enthusiasts throughout the USA. Throughout the country, events run between the 14th of December and the 5th of January. The count takes place within "Count Circles," which focus on specific geographical areas. One of many annual “Christmas Bird Counts” on the first day of the season will take place in the Catskill Mountains of New York State. The Catskill event takes place over 12 hours and covers a 15 mile radius centred on the area of Green Lake. Despite the scientific importance of the Bird Count, teams often have fun by competing to find the rarest species of birds and end the day with drinks and dinner. It all sounds like a good idea to us at Birdtrader! Do any readers know of the equivalent events in the UK or other countries?
