Rare Bird Numbers Increase in UK

Unfortunately, bird enthusiasts are usually accustomed to hearing more stories of imminent extinction and decline when it comes to rare birds, rather than success stories. But that’s what we have for you today! Numbers of the stone curlew, which is one of Britain’s rarest birds, have doubled according to scientists. The stone curlew is more common in the south of Europe, Britain being at the northern edge of its territory. In Britain its usually found around Salisbury Plain and the farmland of southwest England, as well as some parts of Norfolk. In the 1980s there were just 150 pairs of stone curlews in the UK – but this year around 360 pairs have been known to have bred. This rare success has been attributed to the efforts of the RSPB and farmers, who have worked together to make sure that stone curlews are able to breed safely and securely. Which just goes to show that with a little bit of effort, rare birds can be protected, saved and even see their decline in numbers dramatically reversed!
